  • Hailia

    Participated · Equity · Jun 2025

Hailia develops resource-efficient seafood processing technology that transforms underutilised fish raw materials into high-value ready-to-eat products. The company launched its first commercial product, “pulled rainbow trout,” in 2024 with Kalavapriikki and S-Group and has rolled out products for food service and industrial kitchens in collaboration with Hätälä. Hailia licenses its equipment and technology to international fish processors and holds exclusive rights to use the technology in seafood applications. The firm says its approach can increase human-consumption use of fish by 20–40%, supporting lower-carbon protein production as seafood demand grows. Strategic partnerships with processor Kalavapriikki and engineering provider Dana Technology underpin its plans to scale manufacturing and expand international licensing.

  • Fiberdom

    Participated · Equity · Apr 2025

Fiberdom develops a patented "supermaterial" made from FSC-certified wood fibers, transforming market pulp and paperboard into a 100% plastic-free, recyclable and home-compostable material. The material is formable while maintaining durability and strength, and the company's flagship product—a line of plastic-free cutlery—has achieved commercial success. Fiberdom focuses on applications in packaging, interior design, and durable goods where sustainable alternatives to plastic are in high demand. The company highlights four critical criteria—functionality, scalability, sustainability, and recyclability—as central to its technology. Fiberdom secured €3.5M to accelerate product development and commercialisation, reflecting investor confidence in the team and capabilities. The funding package included a €0.6M grant from Business Finland and participation from long-term investor Heino Group, Nordic Foodtech VC, and Holdix Oy. The startup is positioning itself to capture demand in the expanding global fiber-based packaging market, projected to grow from $407B in 2025 to $567B by 2034.

  • Onego Bio

    Participated · Series A · Apr 2024

Onego Bio is a Helsinki-based precision fermentation food‑biotech company that produces Bioalbumen®, a real egg protein made entirely animal-free. Founded in 2022 as a spinoff from VTT by CEO Maija Itkonen, the company is working with major food companies on formulations for baked goods, confectionery, snacks, sauces, pasta, meat alternatives, and more. It currently conducts commercial operations in San Diego, producing Bioalbumen® with co-manufacturers while finalizing plans for its first own manufacturing unit. A single full-scale manufacturing unit is planned to have a two-million-liter fermentation capacity, equivalent to the protein produced by six million laying hens. Onego is prioritizing North American commercialization where regulatory pathways are faster, and it plans to submit a GRAS notice to the FDA this year with hopes of receiving a "no questions" letter in 2025. Financially, the company has raised €65M to date, including a €50.5M raise in April 2024 and the recent €14M in new funding. Onego Bio develops Bioalbumen®, an animal-free egg white protein produced with patented fungal precision‑fermentation technology that is bioidentical to ovalbumin and nutritionally complete (PDCAAS 1.0, >90 g protein/100 g). The company demonstrated industrial production potential of 120 g/L in 250,000 L fermentation vessels and currently collaborates with over 25 CPG companies across baked goods, confectionery, snacks, sauces, pasta, and meat alternatives. Founded in 2022 as a VTT spinoff, Onego positions its technology for competitive price points versus conventional egg protein and emphasizes superior functionality, flavor neutrality, and scalability. The funding will support North American go‑to‑market efforts, scaling to industrial production, expanding a US commercial team, partnering with co‑manufacturers, and finalising in‑house manufacturing plans. Onego is pursuing self‑affirmed GRAS status this year, with an FDA no‑objections letter expected in 2025, and plans to launch first in North America before expanding to Europe, South America, and Asia. The company has raised a total of $56 million to date. Onego Bio is a Finnish biotech spin-off from VTT developing an animal-free egg white using precision fermentation. The company employs a commercially proven Trichoderma technology to produce ovalbumin, the primary egg white protein. It plans to commercialize Bioalbumen™ first as a food ingredient for the food industry and later launch consumer-branded products for baking and cooking. Onego positions its method as safe, sustainable and cost-effective, with claimed efficiency and productivity advantages. The team says the product addresses environmental, food-security and animal-welfare concerns linked to conventional egg production. Financially, the company has recently raised funding to accelerate R&D and product development. Onego Bio is a Helsinki-based biotech spin-off from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland developing animal-free proteins such as egg white using a commercially-proven trichoderma technology. Led by CEO Maija Itkonen, the company aims to produce egg white without chickens to address environmental problems associated with eggs. Its core product is animal-free bioalbumen powder positioned as a food ingredient for the bakery and confectionery industries and as a protein supplement for fitness products. The company plans to build pilot production in Finland in the coming years and to acquire necessary commercial approvals for its first product. Longer-term plans include entering the consumer market with its own branded products for baking and cooking. Onego raised seed funding to commercialize its technology and advance these plans.

  • Voltan Energy

    Participated · Equity · Jun 2022

Voltan Energy designs, constructs, finances and operates ground-source heat systems and distributed geothermal energy infrastructure for large properties. It provides cost-effective, emission-free heating and cooling alternatives and has been commissioned for over 30 sites. The company offers services to construction companies, developers, real estate investors and housing associations and works with partners such as YIT. Voltan emphasizes long-term operation and optimization for large residential buildings. Recent investment from Kiilto Ventures will be used to accelerate expansion and scaling, enabling construction of more and larger energy sites and strengthening its commercial and operational teams. The company positions itself to contribute to carbon-neutral construction and renovation through its financing and go-to-market model. Voltan Energy provides ground source heating and cooling systems as a long-term heat producer for apartment buildings, positioning itself as an alternative to district heating. Its service aims to be more cost-efficient and sustainable, offering lifecycle savings of hundreds of thousands of euros per building and enabling in-home cooling. The company focuses sales on fast-scaling new-construction projects through partnerships with construction companies and initially aims to build about 30–50 sites per year in Finland. Reaching that target would reduce annual CO2 emissions by around 1,200 tonnes. Voltan plans near-term expansion to other Nordic countries and potentially Central Europe. The company says it will invest tens of millions of euros in constructing new ground source heat and cooling systems over the next few years.
