Overview

The NATO Innovation Fund (NIF) was created to supercharge the Alliance’s unique innovation ecosystems. Allied talent and research in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are world-leading, but the market to support deep tech innovation is underfunded. With the NIF, the fund is creating a commercialization machine in both the private and public sectors, backing innovators to secure the future for the Alliance's 1 billion citizens.

    Kraken Technology develops and manufactures autonomous maritime platforms such as uncrewed subsurface vessels for military and security use. Its technology is already used by NATO, the UK Ministry of Defence and the US Navy, and it counts US defence firm Anduril as a partner. Founded in 2020, the British-founded startup has expanded into manufacturing and operational deployment for defence customers. The company said it will use the new funding to develop an uncrewed surface vessel and to expand manufacturing facilities. Financially, Kraken achieved unicorn status with a $175 million Series B at a $1 billion valuation.

    Stark Defence develops weaponised drones and positions itself as a defence technology provider focused on scaling European sovereign capabilities. The company plans to expand electronic warfare research facilities and increase production capacity following its recent financing. In its €500 million raise at a €3.5 billion valuation, more than 80% of proceeds are earmarked for R&D and manufacturing. The startup was founded in 2024 and is backed by investors including Sequoia, Founders Fund, the NATO Innovation Fund and Peter Thiel. Stark says the funding will accelerate development of sovereign defence technologies and scale its engineering and factory footprint. It has emerged as a notable example of increased European defence tech investment.

The platform inspects compiled executables, firmware, and third-party applications without requiring access to source code. The company developed its model in collaboration with government cyber units and commercial security teams. RevEng.AI is positioning its technology for procurement and deployment checks, release comparisons, and integration into security and software delivery workflows. It reports early demand from enterprise and defence customers. Financially, the company recently raised $15 million in a Series A to support growth and deployment of its verification platform.

    Kelluu develops and operates autonomous hydrogen-powered airships that provide persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) as well as civilian sensing applications. Its unmanned fleet supports missions exceeding 12 hours and multiple sensing modalities, enabling real-time, high-resolution imagery. The company says five airships operating from a single base can cover up to 30,000 square kilometres, and it operates what it describes as the world’s largest autonomous airship fleet. Kelluu was founded as a dual-use company and targets defence and civilian markets including forestry monitoring, meteorology, smart-city sensing, and protection of critical infrastructure. The firm is advancing Kelluu AI Labs to develop geospatial foundation models for environmental and resilience applications. Following a €15 million Series A, Kelluu plans to optimise its technology, scale operations, and expand fleet deployments.

The platform is IVDR certified and already deployed in hospitals across Europe, and the company has received FDA Breakthrough Device designation while working toward full U.S. approval. Inbiome builds on existing hospital testing infrastructure to provide more detailed pathogen readouts without requiring new complex sequencing workflows. The company was founded in 2019 by brothers Dries and Jord Budding. Plans funded by the Series A include accelerating regulatory approval, growing the team, developing add-on applications to detect specific resistance genes, and building portable testing setups (including a containerized system that could handle up to 500 tests per day). Inbiome has positioned its technology as useful in both civilian healthcare and frontline military medicine where antimicrobial resistance is acute.
