  • T3 Pharmaceuticals

    T3 Pharmaceuticals develops bacteria-based immuno-oncology therapies built on a proprietary protein delivery platform that repurposes the bacterial type III secretion (T3S) system. The company’s live bacterial vehicles are optimized to accumulate and grow selectively at solid tumors, where they produce and deliver chosen therapeutic proteins into eukaryotic cells. Its lead candidate, T3P-Y058-739, is the first therapeutic developed using the platform and is planned to enter a Phase 1/2 study in solid tumors in early 2021. T3 Pharma will use the new proceeds primarily to progress T3P-Y058-739 through clinical studies. The company closed its third financing round raising over 25M CHF and has raised a total of 40M CHF since its 2015 launch as a spin-off from the University of Basel. Investors in the latest round include the Boehringer Ingelheim Venture Fund, Reference Capital SA, Wille Finance AG and private investors. T3 Pharmaceuticals develops a proprietary protein delivery technology using live bacteria that express the type 3 secretion system to grow selectively within solid tumors and produce therapeutic proteins. The company’s lead product, T3P-Y058-739, originated from the T3 platform and is completing preclinical work. T3 expects the lead candidate to enter clinical testing in mid-2020 and is preparing to progress into the clinical phase. To support that transition it has strengthened its development team, appointed Claire Barton as Chief Medical Officer, and assembled a clinical advisory board of leading clinician scientists. T3 recently closed a second financing round of over CHF12 million to fund completion of preclinical activities and clinical planning. The company works in collaboration with the Biozentrum of the University of Basel for continued support during development.

    Monzo, still operating under the beta-stage name Mondo, is building a full-stack, mobile-first bank that currently issues a prepaid Mastercard linked to an iOS app. The app lets users track spending in real time, view geolocated transactions on a map, categorise purchases, and transfer money to other Monzo users. With an open API and several well-attended hackathons, the company is positioning its in-house technology as a key differentiator from legacy banks. Monzo has a 52,000-person waiting list and will ship the first 1,000 cards this week, with thousands more to follow as part of its public beta. The team says the product reflects only 20 % of the functionality planned once a full banking licence is obtained. Future roadmap items include Apple Pay integration, bill splitting, automated loyalty point redemption, and expansion to other European markets. To date the company has raised about £8 million: £7 million from Passion Capital across two investments and £1 million from an equity crowdfunding campaign.

    Agilyx develops proprietary, patent-protected systems that economically convert difficult-to-recycle waste plastics into high-value synthetic oil. Its systems are sold to industrial and municipal waste-plastic generators and aggregators to reduce disposal costs and generate plastics-associated revenue while meeting environmental standards. In 2010 Agilyx opened a demonstration facility in Tigard, Oregon capable of processing 10 tons of plastic waste into roughly 55 barrels (~2,300 gallons) of synthetic oil per day. The synthetic oil is a drop-in replacement for fossil crude and is currently shipped to a Pacific Northwest refinery under a five-year offtake agreement signed in 2008. Agilyx was founded in 2004 and is based in Beaverton, Oregon. The company emphasizes landfill reduction and energy recovery from waste plastics as core benefits of its technology. Agilyx builds patented, brewery-like systems that thermally convert mixed plastic feedstock into a synthetic crude oil by heating materials until they vaporize and then condensing the gases. The company sells the synthetic crude through off-take deals with large refineries, often on behalf of customers that install Agilyx systems, and it also helps prospective buyers finance those systems. All installations to date have been terrestrial; Agilyx obtained its first air-emissions permits in Oregon and has four projects pending in California, expecting the largest to be permitted and operating by the end of 2011. Scaling to the mass market requires state-by-state permitting to demonstrate emissions safety. Company leadership and investors have discussed broader uses, including deploying systems on barges to address ocean plastic gyres. Agilyx competes with traditional recyclers, incinerators, landfills and alternative bioplastics but positions its process as an economic route for contaminated and mixed plastics.
