Overview

Oxford is a collegiate university, consisting of the central University and colleges. The central University is composed of academic departments and research centers, administrative departments, libraries, and museums. The 38 colleges are self-governing and financially independent institutions, which are related to the central University in a federal system. There are also six permanent private halls, which were founded by different Christian denominations and which still retain their Christian character. The collegiate system is at the heart of the University’s success, giving students and academics the benefits of belonging both to a large, internationally renowned institution and to a small, interdisciplinary academic community. It brings together leading academics and students across subjects and year groups and from different cultures and countries, helping to foster the intense interdisciplinary approach that inspires much of the outstanding research.

    Founded in 2021, RQ Bio is developing long-acting monoclonal antibody therapeutics aimed at providing immediate and durable protection against seasonal influenza. Its lead programme, RQB01, is in IND-enabling studies and is designed to deliver broad strain coverage and extended duration of action via a differentiated dual mechanism targeting conserved epitopes. The company aims to provide season-long protection with a single administration, particularly for immunocompromised and high-risk patients. RQ Bio has an experienced team with prior success in developing long-acting antiviral antibodies and is backed by a syndicate of life sciences investors. The recent $115 million Series A will fund clinical development of RQB01 and further advance the company's antibody discovery platform. Leadership was strengthened with the appointment of Christian S. Schade as Executive Chairman.

Its proprietary technology enables up to an 8x reduction in form factor compared with conventional systems. The company positions this capability to support higher compute density, improved energy efficiency and greater flexibility for AI data centres and power grids. Anders Hakfelt is CEO and co-founder of Densix. Following its initial spin-out from Oxford, Densix has raised $4 million in seed funding to accelerate development, expand its team and strengthen its platform.

  • OXCCU

    Founded in 2021, OXCCU is developing proprietary catalysts and reactor designs that directly hydrogenate CO₂ to create hydrocarbon syncrude branded as OXFUEL, which can be refined into jet-fuel-grade SAF. Its single-step, iron-based Fischer-Tropsch process eliminates the RWGS stage and reduces hydrogen demand, promising lower capital and operating costs than competing e-fuel pathways. The company operates from Begbroke Science Park and London Oxford Airport, where its OX1 demonstration plant was validated in 2024. OXCCU is positioning OXFUEL to help the UK meet its target of 10% SAF in jet fuel by 2030 and is now researching how its fuel can limit non-CO₂ warming effects such as soot-induced contrail formation. Financially, the start-up secured €20.6 million of initial funding in June 2023, followed by a €23.7 million round in September 2025, and most recently obtained a €2 million grant from the ATI Non-CO₂ Programme. These funds support technology scale-up, commercial deployment and climate-impact validation, underscoring OXCCU’s emergence as a leading UK climate-tech innovator.

    Palmer Energy Technology (PETL) develops automotive-grade battery energy storage systems and has announced the acquisition of Brill Power to embed cell-level battery control software across its product line. The combined business aims to improve safety, efficiency, and lifecycle performance for applications ranging from electric buses to grid-scale storage. Brill Power’s software actively manages current at the individual cell level and is engineered and validated in the UK, with operational data stored on UK-based servers. Brill Power will operate under PETL for integrated systems while retaining its brand for module sales to third-party partners. The company is using the transaction and accompanying funding to scale UK operations, enhance domestic assembly, and shorten supply chains to better serve strategic customers such as FirstGroup. PETL’s CEO Andy Palmer said the acquisition gives PETL a leading position in BESS technology and will accelerate development of next-generation control systems.

Stuge, MD, MBA, develops the metra normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) platform to improve outcomes for patients with acute or chronic organ failure. The metra system is approved in the U.S., Europe, Canada and Australia and has been used in over 5,000 liver transplants to keep donor livers metabolically active, extend preservation times and enable functional assessment prior to transplant. The company is commercial stage and focuses on scaling its metra platform across global organ-technology markets. OrganOx says it will use new funding to expand operations and accelerate development efforts. Recent financings include a private placement first close and a primary/secondary equity raise intended to accelerate growth opportunities for the metra platform. OrganOx is an Oxford, UK–based commercial-stage organ medical technology company spun out of the University of Oxford in 2008 and led by Oern R. Stuge, MD, MBA, Executive Chairman. Its core product is the metra® normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) platform, approved in the U.S., Europe, Canada, and Australia, which keeps donor livers metabolically active outside the body for functional assessment prior to transplant. OrganOx recently raised new growth funding to support its commercial and clinical expansion.
