The UK Innovation & Science Seed Fund is backed by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and the Fund’s partners are 9 publicly funded research bodies, including STFC, BBSRC, NERC and Dstl. The Fund is independently managed by venture capital specialist Midven. They help build companies from great science developed in laboratories, science and technology campuses and synthetic biology. They hold investments in some of the UK’s most innovative companies, in areas as diverse as novel antibiotics, research into Alzheimer’s disease, “green” chemicals and airport security.

Luffy AI builds a neuroplastic AI platform that uses sparse neural networks trained in simulation and refined during real-world operation to enable real-time adaptive control without relying on large datasets or continuous cloud retraining. The technology is initially deployed in industrial motor control and integrated with variable frequency drive (VFD) systems such as pumps, fans and conveyor systems. Luffy’s approach aims to improve energy efficiency, reduce commissioning time and optimise performance in physical systems. The company plans to expand into additional applications including robotics, drones and thermal process control. Luffy is commercialising its solutions through proof-of-concept projects and pilot deployments with industrial customers and will use new funding to convert those into long-term partnerships and scale rollout. Dr Matthew Carr is a co-founder and CEO and has framed the funding as enabling increased delivery and deployment efforts.

Hexigone Inhibitors develops a patented Intelli-ion technology designed to sit within protective coatings and activate only when corrosion begins, working at low dosages compared with traditional inhibitors. The company positions the approach for use by coatings manufacturers and for dual-use applications across defence, marine and heavy industry, aiming to lower material costs, reduce carbon intensity in coatings manufacturing, and decrease dependence on legacy heavy-metal chemistries. Hexigone claims the technology offers environmental benefits through reduced toxic inhibitor use and support for circular-economy manufacturing. The company is pursuing commercial deployment, international scale-up and the development of manufacturing capabilities, and has public-sector relevance highlighted by Ministry of Defence support through UKI2S. Financially, Hexigone has secured a £1.2m seed package combining UKI2S equity, angel investment and an Innovate UK grant, and is seeking an additional £300,000–£500,000 to accelerate growth.

QuberTech develops an engineering biology platform to produce high-quality natural rubber from specially engineered high-yield dandelions grown in controlled environments. The approach aims to provide a faster, localised alternative to tropical rubber trees and to reduce dependence on imported rubber vulnerable to climate, disease and geopolitical risks. In addition to rubber, the platform can generate other high-value bio-based compounds with applications across food, cosmetics, sustainable packaging and advanced biomaterials. The company has received support from Defra’s Farming Innovation Programme delivered with Innovate UK and recently secured combined grant and equity financing to advance R&D and pilot-scale validation. QuberTech plans to expand its team and scale commercial operations as it progresses toward deployment.

Resurrect Bio’s core product is its FloraFold AI platform, trained to predict protein–protein interactions between crops and pathogens, coupled with high-throughput in-silico and in-planta screening to validate candidates. The company identifies pathogen effectors that bind plant NLR immune proteins and recommends specific, often minimal, gene edits for partners to break those interactions and restore resistance. Resurrect Bio does not perform the gene edits itself but provides precise targets and instructions to seed companies and breeders. It has demonstrated proof points such as conferring resistance to potato cyst nematode and has a joint development agreement with Corteva to work on corn disease resistance. Founded in December 2021 as a spinout from The Sainsbury Laboratory in Norwich, the company has raised a total of $12.4M and will use the new capital to grow its team and advance development of disease-resistance traits.

HotHouse Therapeutics, based in Norwich, Norfolk, has developed an AI-driven plant bioengineering system capable of designing and growing new chemistry within days. The platform combines pathway-prediction algorithms with the vast enzymatic diversity of the plant kingdom and can currently generate over 20 million novel molecules. Its vertical-farm-ready production process is carbon positive, offering a sustainable and affordable alternative to extractive or resource-heavy chemical synthesis. The company’s initial commercial focus is on producing next-generation vaccine adjuvants, but management also plans to launch traditional drug-discovery programs and progress selected assets into clinical development. By coupling rapid molecule generation with scalable cultivation, the company aims to shorten R&D timelines and lower production costs for biologically active compounds. The recent funding marks the company’s first institutional capital, positioning it to expand operations and intensify R&D efforts around its discovery pipeline.
