Eastern NL is the development company of Eastern Netherlands. We are strengthening the regional economy on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate and the provinces of Overijssel and Gelderland. We do this by investing with public money in entrepreneurs in the Eastern Netherlands. In addition to these financial resources, Oost NL also makes its knowledge, expertise and network available. We are active in the top sectors Food, Energy, Health and Tech. An optimal balance between financial and social return is of great importance to us. We allow entrepreneurs to innovate, invest and internationalize to accelerate their growth. This is how we ensure the sustainable growth of the regional economy and employment. SolarDew develops a solar thermal membrane evaporation and condensation system that produces potable water from polluted water and seawater without electricity, high pressure, or chemicals. Its modular stations (approximately 32 units) can produce about 100 litres of drinking water per day depending on solar irradiation and are designed for low maintenance in remote and water‑stressed communities. After several pilots, the company began industrial production last year, manufactured 150 units, and set up a supply chain with European manufacturers. SolarDew holds a Dutch patent for its technology and expects to secure European and international patents by the end of the year. Early commercial projects have been completed in Chile (with a hydroponics partner) and Greece (with the Technical University of Crete), and the company aims to deploy further commercial installations before the end of 2026. It is also fundraising via a Republic Europe crowdfunding campaign and has set a long‑term goal of providing clean drinking water to one million people by 2035.

TIBEAY Biosciences is a clinical-stage biotechnology company based in the Netherlands focused on developing innovative therapies for acute neurological diseases. Its lead candidate, Ronopterin, is described as a first-in-class inhibitor of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) intended to reduce secondary brain damage after severe traumatic brain injury (SHT). The company plans a European multicenter Phase 3b study and aims to submit a marketing authorization application to the EMA based on that trial. Brilliance is a photonics startup founded in 2023 by Tim Tiek (CEO) and Douwe Geuzebroek (CTO) and is based in Enschede. It develops miniature RGB laser chips built on a patented silicon nitride photonic integrated circuit (PIC) platform with integrated laser technology for use in AR projectors and related display architectures. The company claims its chips reduce power consumption by a factor of ten, increase brightness for outdoor use, and enable smaller, more energy-efficient light engines that can fit into eyewear and automotive HUDs. Brilliance says its manufacturing approach leverages established high-volume chip processes to replace complex optical assemblies. The firm plans to scale up, design custom solutions for customers, and prepare for a first production launch by the end of this year. Financially, it has raised €2 million in seed funding in 2023 and an additional €6 million in the current round led by Cottonwood Technology Fund.

RIFT develops an iron fuel system that uses iron as a circular energy carrier to produce high-temperature industrial heat without direct CO2 emissions. The company aims to replace fossil fuels in sectors where electrification is difficult by supplying iron fuel to industrial customers that integrate Iron Fuel Boilers. RIFT has about 75 employees and signed its first commercial contract in mid-2025 with Kingspan Unidek. The recent financing and EU Innovation Fund award are intended to fund its first commercial project and build its first commercial production facility, which the company expects to be operational in 2029. RIFT projects the initial project will generate roughly 340 GWh of industrial heat annually and about 5 TWh over 15 years while avoiding more than one million tonnes of CO2. The company plans to scale rollout of its iron fuel technology across energy-intensive industries following commercial deployment.
